This tip is pretty self-explanatory, but I can’t tell you how many people draft a kicker with several rounds remaining in the draft. There is no point in doing that. Look at the kicker point totals from any season. The difference between the leader and 15th best is minimal. Kicking can be erratic. Just draft the best kicker you can in the last round of the draft, or get one who is playing against a defense that gives up a lot of points in week one. Please don’t draft a kicker early. Take guys who you think might actually benefit your team down the road.
Another thing you can do, if your league allows it, is to not draft a kicker at all. Instead, use that extra roster spot for another skill position guy. You’re going to be doing your draft during the NFL preseason, so, unfortunately, there are going to be injuries around the league. It could be someone on your roster. If that happens, would you rather have drafted another capable guy and have him ready on your bench, or will you be extra glad that you drafted Nick Folk? Kickers are easily replaceable at any time. Your league will have 8, 10, 12, or 14 teams in it. The NFL has 32 kickers. Don’t draft one early, for god’s sake!!!
