Week 1 is here! Get your wings and beer. Crank up NFL Red Zone and get ready to watch football all day!
Every week, I will be giving me start/sit recommendations, sleeper picks, and potential fantasy busts.
Now, of course, just because I’m calling someone a bust, that doesn’t mean that they will be terrible. It just means that I think they won’t live up to their predictions for this week.
And my sleepers are more like players who may surprise and exceed their projections.
***As always, check for last-minute injuries and inactives***
Here we go for week 1:
Los Angeles Rams at Carolina Panthers
Start ‘em: Cam Newton, Christian McCaffrey, All Rams WRs, Jared Goff, Todd Gurley
Sit ‘em: Greg Olsen
Sleepers: Curtis Samuel
Potential busts: DJ Moore
Lots of rumors from camp about how Curtis Samuel is the top option at WR, but DJ Moore is the one being drafted higher. It will be interesting to see how the targets are distributed.
Tennessee Titans at Cleveland Browns
Start ‘em: Nick Chubb, Odell Beckham Jr., Derrick Henry, Baker Mayfield
Sit ‘em: Marcus Mariota, Adam Humphries
Sleepers: Delanie Walker
Potential busts: David Njoku
Tennessee’s safety play makes me a little hesitant to start Njoku. The Titans lack of passing attack makes me inclined to keep their receivers on the bench, although, Delanie Walker could be a safety blanket for Mariota.
Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville Jaguars
Start ‘em: Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Leonard Fournette, Dede Westbrook
Sit ‘em: Sammy Watkins
Sleepers: Nick Foles
Potential busts: Damien Williams
The Jaguars defense will challenge the Chiefs OL, which may limit Mahomes’ time to throw, but he, Kelce, and Hill should still get theirs. Foles will be forced to throw a bunch to try and keep up. The Chiefs’ RB situation is muddy. Timeshare central.
Baltimore Ravens at Miami Dolphins
Start ‘em: Lamar Jackson, Mark Ingram, Mark Andrews, Kenyan Drake, Albert Wilson
Sit ‘em: Marquise Brown, Willie Snead, Ryan Fitzpatrick
Sleepers: Hayden Hurst
Potential busts: DeVante Parker
You can feel pretty good about starting any Ravens players. The Dolphins are in bad shape. I would maybe be cautious with starting their WRs, though, because Baltimore should be able to run at will, and they may not have to pass very often.
Atlanta Falcons at Minnesota Vikings
Start ‘em: Matt Ryan, Devonta Freeman, Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Kirk Cousins, Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, Calvin Ridley, Austin Hooper, Stefon Diggs
Sit ‘em: I wouldn’t sit anyone in this game
Sleepers: Mohammed Sanu
Potential busts: Kyle Rudolph
This one should be a shootout. I like pretty much every matchup here for fantasy purposes. Will Irv Smith cut into Rudolph’s targets? We shall see.
Buffalo Bills at New York Jets
Start ‘em: Le’Veon Bell, Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder
Sit ‘em: Josh Allen, Sam Darnold
Sleepers: Devin Singletary
Potential busts: n/a
The battle of second-year quarterbacks against pretty good defenses. I’d only play them if I had no other choice. I’m excited to see what Singletary does as the featured back in Buffalo.
Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles
Start ‘em: Carson Wentz, Zach Ertz, Alshon Jeffery
Sit ‘em: Case Keenum, Jordan Howard, Miles Sanders
Sleepers: DeSean Jackson
Potential busts: Derrius Guice, Jordan Reed
This should be a feast for the Eagles skill players. As far as the running backs…who knows who will get the goal-line carries? Hold off until week 2 to start those guys.
Indianapolis Colts at Los Angeles Chargers
Start ‘em: Philip Rivers, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Hunter Henry
Sit ‘em: Jacoby Brissett, Marlon Mack
Sleepers: Jack Doyle
Potential busts: T.Y. Hilton, Eric Ebron, Austin Ekeler
So many question marks for the Colts’ offense now. Fantasy stock has dropped for everyone except Brissett. There may not be a bigger boom-or-bust player this year than T.Y. Hilton.
Cincinnati Bengals at Seattle Seahawks
Start ‘em: Joe Mixon, Tyler Boyd, Russell Wilson, Tyler Lockett, Chris Carson
Sit ‘em: Andy Dalton, DK Metcalf
Sleepers: Rashaad Penny
Potential busts: n/a
Expect a ton of targets for Tyler Boyd and a lot of touches for Chris Carson.
Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals
Start ‘em: Kyler Murray, David Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk, Kenny Golladay, Kerryon Johnson
Sit ‘em: Matthew Stafford
Sleepers: Cardinals Defense
Potential busts: Marvin Jones Jr.
Here we go…the debut of the Kyler Murray era. The Kingsbury offense. How well will it do? I expect a lot of scoring on both sides. The biggest beneficiary of the new offense may very well be David Johson.
New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys
Start ‘em: Saquon Barkley, Evan Engram, Ezekiel Elliot, Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper
Sit ‘em: Eli Manning, Jason Witten
Sleepers: Michael Gallup
Potential busts: Sterling Shepard
The battle for the top fantasy RB gets underway. I love Evan Engram in this game. I worry about Sterling Shepard. Will he become a true WR1? Time will tell.
San Francisco 49ers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Start ‘em: Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle, Dante Pettis, Jameis Winston, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, O.J. Howard
Sit ‘em: Peyton Barber
Sleepers: Matt Breida, Marquise Goodwin
Potential busts: Tevin Coleman
Proceed with caution with the San Francisco backfield. The word is that Matt Breida is actually atop the depth chart, but they will give lots of touches to both backs. On paper, Jameis Winston should devour the 49ers defense, but we all know he can be erratic. I’m… confident?
Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots
Start ‘em: Ben Roethlisberger, JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Conner, Vance McDonald, Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, Sony Michel
Sleepers: James Washington
Potential busts: James White, Josh Gordon
Julian Edelman will have 282 targets in this game. Well, maybe not quite that many…but it won’t be far off. Juju will show what he can do as the main receiver in Pittsburgh. And wow, Antonio Brown has signed with the Pats. He’ll be eligible for week 2.
Houston Texans at New Orleans Saints
Start ‘em: Deshaun Watson, DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas
Sit ‘em: Latavius Murray
Sleepers: Keke Coutee
Potential busts: Duke Johnson
If you have Hopkins or Thomas, you’re probably salivating. The big question mark is Duke Johnson. How many opportunities will he get?
Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders
Start ‘em: Emmanuel Sanders, Josh Jacobs, Tyrell Williams
Sit ‘em: Joe Flacco, Derek Carr
Sleepers: Courtland Sutton
Potential busts: Phillip Lindsay
With Antonio Brown gone, the guy who will benefit the most is Tyrell Williams. And let’s keep an eye on the Broncos’ backfield. Committee or not?
Good luck in week one!
